Two years ago, you generously sent me a set of plans for your Bob-About 2. After 2 years of sporadic testing, it has become obvious that your hull has the lowest drag of anything I have tested. So after 2 years of playing with bottle boats, I have finally recognized the obvious, and built your hull into a finished Footy. A number of interesting things happened along the way. I probably cut the patterns a little too big to fit in the box, so I cut 1/4" off the stern. I also made the keel a little too big, so chopped 1/4" off the top of the prow. I also went too far in weight saving, consequently, the finished hull sits a little high in the water.

It had its maiden voyage on Thursday, and appeared to sail very well. I am guessing that it regains its water line length as soon as it heels.

I am planning on racing it in the AMYA Region 1 Footy Regatta in New Hampshire this weekend.
  2. Thanks for stopping by! I am mad on Footys as you probably already know.
feel free to pm or e mail me to talk footys!!!

Comet,almost done

by Brett on 02-01-2008 at 04:53 PM
Well I havn't done a good job of updating this build log,The boat is almost ready for trials.
I must confess for once I have spent my free time building the boat rather than takings pictures and talking about it.
I am very exited about the possibilities for this boat. I have pushed the design into an area of the rule that I think is correct but without going to far away from what others and I have done previously.Comet is thus quite conservative in many ways and hence may offer a slight

I have decided to carry on with the design I penned for the UK nationals last year.
The boat never got finnished as I was unable to travel to the event.

The design is loosely based on Roger Stollerys "Roar Edge" M class,a boat I have admired for many years.
She is of med displacement at approx 475g all up.
Length is 330mm beam 90mm,she fits into the box on the diagonal.
It will be very interesting to see how the boat sails against the shorter

Liverpool Challenger

Hi all,
I have decided to use this Blog to detail the design and construction of a Footy class yacht for the Liverpool 2008 event.
It is very unlikely that I will travel to Liverpool from NZ to compete but I will be able to post the boat and have some one sail it for me.
I am going to make this project fairly "open source" I will even publish the lines plan and all details of the design once the event is over.
I understand there will be some sort of Design forum
